外交学院潘沼中教授编选、注释的《美国文化与文学选集1607-1914》是我国第一部美国学专题英文教材。全书以美国文化与社会的发展为脉络，分为“清教徒时期”、“美国革命与共和国初创时期”、“资本主义兴盛时期”、“镀金与改革时期”四大部分。每部分的选文包括政治、社会、历史、文学诸方面，而以文学作品居多，体现了美国在各个历史时期的真实风貌和演变过程。为帮助读者了解美国文化的发展规律和特点，每部分前冠有一篇中文引言；为帮助读者做进一步研究，每部分后附有阅读书单。每篇选文均辅以用中文撰写的作者简介或背景简介，以及独具特点的作品注释。
