体育英语阅读是一门关于特殊用途英语的课程，它和通用英语阅读课程在课程设置方厦是不同的。通用英语阅读课程旨在提高学生的阅读技能，使学生通过广泛阅读提高阅读能力。特殊用途英语阅读注重的是对某一个学科领域的材料阅读，以及对描述该学科内容方面的语言特点的解释、对学科知识框架的认识和构建。由此，陈珊主编的《体育英语读写教程(上海市本科重点课程指定用书)》在内容上根据体育与英语的关系(即体育中的英语和英语中的体育)分别来选取材料：在普通英语方面，通过选择通用英语材料体现体育与社会的关系；在体育特殊英语方面，从术语、描述体育策略、赛事描述中的特殊词语搭配及用法来体现如何用英语正确描述体育项目特点及过程。通过这种编排让学生一方面可以逐渐构建体育体系的框架，另一方面可以了解如何用英语准确恰当地描述体育项目，有助于学生之后对体育英语的学习。
