新文科基于现有传统文科，突出文与理工农医的交叉，为学生提供综合性的跨学科学习，达到扩展知识和培养创新思维的目的。根据此思路，该教材所选材料均为各学科、专业的基础知识材料，包括最新科技的基础知识介绍，其特点是能为英语学习者特别是作为文科学生的英语专业学生所接受。其内容包括从语言到科技表达特有的图表、翻译方法等的介绍。所选文体广泛，包括科技普及材料、操作说明、科技合同等。该教材不拘泥于难度，以便英语专业学生在校期间培养科技方面的兴趣，从而有对最新科技的追踪意识，科技知识积累意识，为走出校门、适应社会需求打下基础。

谢建奎，1963年11月出生，湖南宁乡人，副教授、硕士生导师。1993年研究生毕业于北京师范大学，研究方向：英语教学、语言学、科技和经贸翻译。现任职于广西大学，主要讲授硕士研究生的科技翻译、翻译批评，本科生的英语写作、语言学、应用翻译等课程。曾获广西大学“我心目中的好老师”称号。在国内学术期刊上发表论文多篇，主编《英语互动式写作教程》1部，参编英语教材3部。
