本书是为弥补精读课堂上教师精力和时间的不足，帮助学生更好地学习、吸收课本知识而编写的。
该书共分10个单元，每个单元由课文精解、学生用书练习答案及解析和阅读活动三个部分组成。此外，为帮助学生检测学习效果并为四级考试做好准备，书本还设计了两套自测题，分别放在第五单元和第十单元后面。最后，还有一个附录，为两套自测答案。
