由克罗尔和德格鲁特编写的《双语认知的心理语言学研究》在前言中就开宗明义地告诉读者，它是从认知的角度来研究双语的。何谓认知？所谓认知，从心理学的角度讲，就是环境和人的大脑的交互过程。换句话说，就是环境作用于人，人又同时作用于环境。认知论是和行为主义的刺激反应论相对立的一种理论体系。它尤其反对刺激反应论中否定人也可以作用于环境的理论。那么人和环境如何互动呢？不同的认知流派有不同的答案。
