简　　介  

　　多克（伯特·兰卡斯特 Burt Lancaster 饰）和罗拉（雪莉·布思 Shirley Booth 饰）本来享受着非常幸福的生活，可以一切都因为罗拉的怀孕而发生了改变。为了增加收入，多克不得不放弃了自己挚爱的研究事业，转行成为了一名按摩师。而罗拉最终没能顺利的生下孩子，不仅孩子没了，自己还丧失了生育能力，绝望之中，多克只能依靠酒精来麻痹自己的痛苦，而罗拉则将对孩子的感情寄托在家里的小狗身上，夫妻两人的脸上都再没有了曾经的笑容。
　　多克将空房间租给了一位名叫玛丽（泰瑞·摩尔 Terry Moore 饰）的女孩，活泼又美丽的玛丽渐渐吸引了多克的注意，让多克和罗拉之间的关系变得更加恶劣起来。
