　　在19世紀時，有一對貴族夫妻遇上了船難，幸好被沖到了非洲海岸而倖免於難；為了等待救援，丈夫建造了一座樹屋以供兩人棲身，不久後懷孕的妻子便在樹屋中生下麟兒。後來有個猩猩族群攻擊樹屋，這對夫妻在一片混亂中雙雙罹難，他們所留下的稚子則被一隻剛剛喪子的母猩猩當作自己的兒子撫養長大。
　　20年後，菲利普船長發現了這個以為自己是猩猩的年輕人，而根據樹屋裡遺留下的物品來判斷，他極有可能是葛雷史東伯爵失蹤的繼承人之子，因此他覺得有責任教教化這個年輕人回歸文明世界。
