在一系列意想不到的事件让Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon（Juno Temple饰）与当局陷入纠葛后，这位看似典型的中西部家庭主妇突然又回到了她认为已经抛之脑后的生活中。
北达科他州警长Roy Tillman（Jon Hamm饰）很久以来都在寻找Dot。作为一名牧场主、传道者和执法官，Roy相信自己就是法律，因此凌驾于法律之上。
站在Roy这一边的是他忠诚但不负责任的儿子Gator（Joe Keery饰），他迫切想要向卓越非凡的父亲证明自己。可惜Gator已经无可救药了。因此，为了追捕Dot，Roy招募了Ole Munch（Sam Spruell饰），一个出身神秘的流浪者。
随着她最深的秘密开始被揭晓，Dot试图保护她的家人免受来自自己过去的伤害，但她溺爱又善意的丈夫Wayne（David Rysdahl饰）不断向他的母亲Lorraine Lyon（Jennifer Jason Leigh饰）寻求帮助。作为美国最大债务催收机构的CEO，这位债务女王对儿子选择的妻子并不满意，也不放过任何机会表达她的反对。
