苏西（拉什达·琼斯 Rashida Jones 饰）是一位居住在日本京都的美国女性，当丈夫和儿子在一次神秘的空难中失踪，她的生活从此被颠覆。作为“安慰”，她得到了桑尼，一个由她丈夫的电子公司制造的新型家用机器人。起初，苏西对桑尼试图填补她生活中的空白感到反感，但渐渐地，她们建立了意想不到的友谊。她们一起揭开了苏西一家真实遭遇的黑暗真想，并陷入了一个苏西从不知道的危险世界。
