该片被誉为台湾“新电影”的开山之作。四位导演拍摄的四段故事（《小龙头》、《指望》、《跳蛙》、《报上名来》）构成了童年（小学）、少年（中学）、青年（大学）、成年（社会）四个人生时期（阶段）。
