The European tendency to respect the buildings of the past in the aftermath of World War II has led, in recent years, to a certain degree of artificiality, and many projects have fallen back on ill-informed traditionalism or on so-called restorations that only preserve a building's facade but are otherwise entirely new. Entreprendre la restauration d'un batiment s'avere parfois plus complexe qu'en construire un nouveau. En effet, il convient de tenir compte de deux obligations :d'une part celle de conserver les elements ayant une valeur historique, et d'autre part celle de prendre en consideration I'etat de la construction existante. Or, il est rare de le connaitre avant de demarrer un projet. La tendance europeenne, qui etait depuis la fin de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale de respecter les constructions historiques, a conduit, ces dernieres annees, a une approche quelque peu artificieuse. En effet, dans de nombreux projets, le concept de restauration a ete mal interpretr :certains, qualifies, a tort, de restauration, ne conservaient que la facade, recelant derriere un edifice entierement nouveau. Ces interventions, ont faconne une nouvelle vision des faits : la restauration devient I'adaptation d'un bStiment ancien aux necessites actuelles, releguant le dialogue avec le passe au second plan. Cet ouvrage offre une selection hors paire d'oeuvres d'architectes du monde entier, un eventail d'anciens espaces restaures, a I'instar d'ateliers, usines, etables, granges et moulins, reconvertis en habitations privies.

Manchmal ist es schwieriger ein Gebaude zu renovieren als ein Neues zu errichten, nicht nur deshalb, weil Teile des Gebaudes von historischem Wert sein konnten, sondern auch aufgrund der Bausubstanz. In Europa war es nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges ublich, alte Gebaude zu respektieren, was in den letzten Jahren zu einer gewissen Gek0nsteltheit fuhrte. So wurden bei vielen Umbauprojekten Eingriffe als Restaurierung bezeichnet, bei denen jedoch nur die Fassade erhalten blieb und die in Wirklichkeit Neubauten waren. Angesichts dieser Eingriffe an alten Gebauden kam eine neue, aufgeklartere Sichtweise auf, bei der die Umgestaltung als Anpassung des Gebaudes an die Anforderungen des modernen Lebens begriffen wird, wobei der Dialog mit der Vergangenheit in den Hintergrund tritt. In diesem Buch wird eine interessante Auswahl an Projekten von Architekten aus aller Welt gezeigt, unter anderem Umgestaltungen alter Werkshallen, Werkstatten, Stalle, BauernhOfe, Muhlen usw., aus denen private Wohnraume geworden sind.
